LONG BEACH POLICE DEPT.’S ‘BAKER TO VEGAS’ RELAY TEAM PLACES SECOND IN THEIR CATEGORY, 33RD OVERALL

The Long Beach Police Department’s (LBPD) relay team placed second in their category and 33rd overall during the 27th Annual Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay held April 16 through 18, 2011. Their time was 15 hours 48 minutes 39 seconds. LBPD has participated since 1988. In 2010, the LBPD team finished third in their category and 39th overall.

This 120-mile relay race spans from Baker, California to Las Vegas, Nevada. This year there were over 5,200 relay runners and 261 teams from nearly 1000 law enforcement and military agencies from throughout the U.S. The temperature in Baker was 99 degrees at 3 p.m. last Saturday when the LBPD team left Baker. On the second
leg of the relay, the asphalt was a steamy 160 degrees. The 2012 event is set for April 21-22 with headquarters secured again at the Las Vegas Hilton. Baker to Vegas brings $15 million into Vegas over three days, not including gambling.

The Long Beach Police Foundation (LBPF) recently welcomed LBPD’s Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay team as one of its newest community outreach programs. The LBPF will continue the long-established tradition of sponsoring a team of sworn LBPD personnel to participate in the annual Baker to Vegas relay and will act as the
501(c) 3 nonprofit for the group. A percentage of the proceeds will also be donated to the Long Beach Police Officers Association Widow and Orphans Fund.

The Long Beach Police Foundation (LBPF) is an independent, community based, non-profit organization that encourages public-private partnerships to support public safety and help build a safer community. To donate or volunteer, click HERE or call 562.343.5111.
